When you have to rely on your rudimentary knowledge of pop culture instead of your effectiveness at communicating in order to relate to your students…

Can teachers stop doing this? It’s weird and telling. You aren’t making yourself seem hip when you attempt these bits. You’re displaying how out of touch, and friendless, you really are. As funny as it may first seem, this is the equivalent of the “cool mom” who lets her kids drink and smoke pot with her at home. Those teachers and parents never have the respect of the children around them because instead of showcasing their knowledge, and cleverly using whatever subject they’re teaching as a life lesson, the “adult” distorts the clear power structure by trying and failing to be exactly what the kids don’t want: a desperate friend. You cannot con children into liking you. Stop.
