“Cleveland Police Patrolman Association President Steve Loomis issued a statement on Monday afternoon saying that ‘something positive must come from this tragic loss.’
‘We can only hope the Rice family and their attorneys will use a portion of this settlement to help educate the youth of Cleveland in the dangers associated with the mishandling of both real and facsimile firearms,’ Loomis said in the statement.”
Yes. Because screaming “freeze” at the same moment you shoot to kill a 12-year-old is “the youth of Cleveland’s” fault. Not the cop who didn’t bother to check if the gun was real. Not the white man who sat on a bench for twenty minutes and watched Tamir play by himself for almost a half hour without incident, yet called the 9-1-1 to report “suspecious behavior”. And not the emergency dispatcher who just told the cop there was a “armed, black, male suspect in the park”. It’s black children who are at fault.
I’ll be sure to pass this information along to the white boys I went to high school with who had facial hair and carried around black pressurized paintball guns.
